A leaf bud technique for rapid propagation of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) Scientia Agricola
Neves,Reizaluamar de Jesus; Souza,Leonardo Silva; Oliveira,Eder Jorge de.
ABSTRACT The slow rate of multiplication is one of the main constraints on the production of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz). This work aimed to evaluate the use of leaf buds for rapid propagation of cassava varieties. Leaf buds were excised from three cassava varieties (BRS Kiriris, 98150-06 and 9624-09) for plantlet generation. The experiment was completely randomized with a 5 (age of mother plant) × 3 (position of the leaf buds on the stems) × 2 (agrochemical treatments) factorial design. Data were collected on leaf sprouting percentage (Spro.Per), plantlet height (Plant.Hei) and total dry mass of plantlets (Dry.Mass.Plant). There was a difference between the three traits for most of the varieties, demonstrating significant effects on the agronomic...

A lima bean core collection based on molecular markers Scientia Agricola
Gomes,Regina Lucia Ferreira; Costa,Marcones Ferreira; Alves-Pereira,Alessandro; Bajay,Miklos Maximiliano; Viana,João Paulo Gomes; Valente,Sérgio Emílio dos Santos; Lopes,Ângela Celis de Almeida; Zucchi,Maria Imaculada; Pinheiro,José Baldin.
ABSTRACT Some germplasm collections have a high number of accessions, which makes it difficult to explore the genetic variability present in the germplasm bank due to the redundancy and the difficulty of detailed analysis of all conserved accessions. Therefore, our study aimed to analyze the genetic diversity of 153 lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) accessions for the purpose of constructing a core collection. Eleven SSRs were used for this purpose. The 153 lima bean accessions can be represented by low redundancy using a minimum of 34 accessions, thus representing 22 % of the size of the entire germplasm bank. The core collection had a higher Shannon diversity index and expected heterozygosity (1.906 and 0.811, respectively) than those presented by the entire...

A macroscopic and stereological imaging dataset of Pleuronectes platessa ovaries ArchiMer
Sauger, Carine; Quinquis, Jerome; Kellner, Kristell; Heude-berthelin, Clothilde; Lepoittevin, Mélanie; Elie, Nicolas; Dubroca, Laurent.
The North Sea plaice, Pleuronectes platessa (Linnaeus, 1758), is a commonly studied commercial flatfish with poorly known ovarian histology. The following dataset is a collection of female plaice gonad images and their corresponding histological slides, collected during a complete season of the plaice’s reproduction cycle. Stereology was used to determine the percentage of different structures found throughout the ovaries. Inter-agent calibrations were accomplished in order to harmonize the stereological readings, and were based on a comprehensive reading protocol and histological lexicon that were specifically written for the plaice’s ovaries. The distribution and homogeneity of the different cell types found throughout the ovaries were also evaluated....

A method to assess algicidal activity of microalgal extracts coupling microalgae produced in stirred closed photobioreactor operating in continuous with pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry ArchiMer
Menguy, Eva; Dumontet, Vincent; Coulombier, Noémie; Meriot, Vincent; Le Dean, Loic; Barthelemy, Vanille; Jauffrais, Thierry.
We describe in the present study a quick and reliable method based on chlorophyll a fluorescence to assess putative algicidal effect of different microalgal extracts. We couple microalgal production under chemostat cultivation mode to continuously produce a given microalgae species (e.g. Dunaliella salina in this study) at a stable physiological state to ease comparison between extracts tested; with a non-destructive method based on chlorophyll a fluorescence. Pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry was used to assess over time the effect of different microalgal crude extracts on the efficiency of the photosystem II (PSII) of a tested microalgae (Dunaliella salina). • Microalgal production at stationary phase in stirred closed photobioreactor (PBR)...

A methodological framework for characterizing fish swimming and escapement behaviors in trawls ArchiMer
Robert, Marianne; Cortay, Aurore; Morfin, Marie; Simon, Julien; Morandeau, Fabien; Deneubourg, Jean Louis; Vincent, Benoit.
Knowledge about fish behavior is crucial to be able to influence the capture process and catch species composition. The rapid expansion of the use of underwater cameras has facilitated unprecedented opportunities for studying the behavior of species interacting with fishing gears in their natural environment. This technological advance would greatly benefit from the parallel development of dedicated methodologies accounting for right-censored observations and variable observation periods between individuals related to instrumental, environmental and behavioral events. In this paper we proposed a methodological framework, based on a parametric Weibull mixture model, to describe the process of escapement attempts through time, test effects of covariates and...

A Methodology and Tool for Mapping the Risk of Cumulative Effects on Benthic Habitats ArchiMer
Quemmerais-amice, Frédéric; Barrere, Julien; La Rivière, Marie; Contin, Gabriel; Bailly, Denis.
The implementation of the European integrated marine policy poses many scientific challenges. Among them, the knowledge and understanding of interactions between anthropogenic pressures and ecological components is an important issue, particularly to help define Good Environmental Status, environmental targets and monitoring programs of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008, MSFD). Assessment of cumulative effects of different pressures is a particularly complex issue requiring modeling tools and methods, as well as accurate data sets on human activities, anthropogenic pressures and ecological components. The results of these assessments are also uncertain and highly dependent on the calculation methods and assumptions, as well as on the data sets...

A Model Investigation of the Influences of the South‐East Madagascar Current on the South‐East Madagascar Bloom ArchiMer
Dilmahamod, A. F.; Penven, Pierrick; Aguiar‐gonzález, B.; Reason, C. J. C.; Hermes, J. C..
The South‐East Madagascar Bloom, one of the most compelling biogeochemical features of the Indian Ocean, occurs sporadically during austral summer in the oligotrophic waters south‐east of Madagascar, where it can cover up to 1% of the global ocean surface area. Its spatial extension and its timing are highly variable. A high‐resolution biophysical model is used to investigate a previous hypothesis that the onset of a particular circulation of the South‐East Madagascar Current advects fresher and nutrient‐rich waters eastward, feeding the bloom. The model is able to reproduce an intermittent phytoplankton bloom with large spatial variability but in the subsurface layers, as well as the presence of an irregular retroflection of the South‐East Madagascar...

A Multidisciplinary Approach for Restoration Ecology of Shallow Coastal Lagoons, a Case Study in South France ArchiMer
De Wit, Rutger; Leruste, Amandine; Le Fur, Ines; Maki Sy, Mariam; Bec, Beatrice; Ouisse, Vincent; Derolez, Valerie; Rey-valette, Hélène.
By the end of the 20th century, many of the coastal lagoons along the French Mediterranean coast showed insufficient water quality and degraded ecosystem states due to anthropogenic impacts. Among these, nutrient over-enrichment, resulting in eutrophication, has been a major concern. The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) has initiated public action to improve their water quality and ecosystem state using an approach rooted in restoration ecology. Here we analyze how this has been applied for the coastal lagoons in South France, considering eutrophication as an example of ecosystem degradation and oligotrophication as the corresponding trajectory for ecological restoration of the eutrophied coastal lagoons. Oligotrophication trajectories, initiated by the...

A Multi-Observation Least-Squares Inversion for GNSS-Acoustic Seafloor Positioning ArchiMer
Sakic, Pierre; Ballu, Valerie; Royer, Jean-yves.
Monitoring deformation on the seafloor is a major challenge for modern geodesy and a key to better understanding tectonic processes and assess related hazards. The extension of the geodetic networks offshore can be achieved by combining satellite positioning (GNSS) of a surface platform with acoustic ranging to seafloor transponders. This approach is called GNSS-Acoustic (GNSS-A). The scope of this work is to provide a tool to identify and quantify key points in the error budget of such experiment. For this purpose, we present a least-squares inversion method to determine the absolute position of a seafloor transponder array. Assuming the surface platform is accurately positioned by GNSS, the main observables are the two-way travel time in water between...

A Multiparametric Nonlinear Regression Approach for the Estimation of Global Surface Ocean pCO(2) Using Satellite Oceanographic Data ArchiMer
Krishna, Kande Vamsi; Shanmugam, Palanisamy; Nagamani, Pullaiahgari Venkata.
Estimation of the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO(2)) and its space-time variability in global surface ocean waters is essential for understanding the carbon cycle and predicting the future atmospheric CO2 concentration. Until recently, only basin-scale distribution of pCO(2) has been reported by using satellite-derived climatological data due to the lack of models for global-scale applications. In the present work, a multiparametric nonlinear regression (MPNR) for the estimation of global-scale distribution of pCO(2) on the ocean surface is developed using continuous in-situ measurements of pCO(2), chlorophyll-a (Chla) concentration, sea surface temperature (SST), and sea surface salinity (SSS) obtained on a number of cruise programs in various...

A nanoemulsion-based delivery system for imatinib and in vitro anticancer efficacy BJPS
Karimi,Maryam; Karimian,Khashayar; Heli,Hossein.
A self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDDS) composed of ethyl oleate, Tween 80 and polyethylene glycol 600 was prepared as a new route to improve the efficacy of imatinib. The drug-loaded SNEDDS formed nanodroplets of ethyl oleate stabilized by Tween 80 and polyethylene glycol 600 with a diameter of 81.0±9.5 nm. The nanoemulsion-based delivery system was stable for at least two months, with entrapment efficiency and loading capacity of 16.4±0.1 and 48.3±0.2%, respectively. Imatinib-loaded SNEDDS was evaluated for the drug release profiles, and its effectiveness against MCF-7 cell line was investigated. IC50 values for the imatinib-loaded SNEDDS and an imatinib aqueous solution were 3.1 and 6.5 µg mL-1, respectively.

A New Assessment of Thioester-Containing Proteins Diversity of the Freshwater Snail Biomphalaria glabrata ArchiMer
Duval, David; Pichon, Rémi; Lassalle, Damien; Laffitte, Maud; Gourbal, Benjamain; Galinier, Richard.
Thioester-containing proteins (TEPs) superfamily is known to play important innate immune functions in a wide range of animal phyla. TEPs are involved in recognition, and in the direct or mediated killing of several invading organisms or pathogens. While several TEPs have been identified in many invertebrates, only one TEP (named BgTEP) has been previously characterized in the freshwater snail, Biomphalaria glabrata. As the presence of a single member of that family is particularly intriguing, transcriptomic data and the recently published genome were used to explore the presence of other BgTEP related genes in B. glabrata. Ten other TEP members have been reported and classified into different subfamilies: Three complement-like factors (BgC3-1 to BgC3-3),...
